What the TEAS Math Section Covers

The math section of the TEAS 7 exam is made up of 38 total questions with a 57-minute timer. Of the 38 questions, only 34 count towards your score.

Math is often considered one of the more challenging sections of the exam. It is made up of 2 sub-topics:

Number and Algebra (18 Questions)

• M.1.1: Convert among non-negative fractions, decimals, and percentages.
• M.1.2: Perform arithmetic operations with rational numbers.
• M.1.3: Compare and order rational numbers.
• M.1.4: Solve equations with one variable.
• M.1.5: Solve real-world problems using one-or multi-step operations with real numbers
• M.1.6: Solve real-world problems involving percentages.
• M.1.7: Apply estimation strategies and rounding rules to real-world problems.
• M.1.8: Solve real-world problems involving proportions.
• M.1.9: Solve real-world problems involving ratios and rates of change.
• M.1.10: Solve real-world situations using expressions, equations, and inequalities.

Measurement and Data (16 Questions)

• M.2.1: Interpret relevant information from tables, charts, and graphs.
• M.2.2: Evaluate the information in data sets, tables, charts, and graphs using statistics.
• M.2.3: Explain the relationship between two variables.
• M.2.4: Calculate geometric quantities.
• M.2.5: Convert within and between standard and metric systems.

TEAS Math Study Guide

ATI gives us the objectives tested, but this is not really an efficient way to study. We have taken those objectives and split them up into “digestible” lessons and topics.

Preparing for math becomes more manageable when you study these concepts in organized and smaller lessons and topics.

TEAS 7 Math Blueprint

As mentioned above, the math section contains 38 total questions. Of those 38 questions, 34 are scored. You will have 57 minutes to complete this section of the exam.

• Number of Questions: 38
• Number of Scored Questions: 34
• Time Limit: 57 Minutes

Note: You will not know which questions are unscored. So try your best on all questions.

To stay on track (from a time standpoint) make sure you are spending less than 90 seconds per question. If you start spending more than 90 seconds on each question, you will run out of time.

How the 34 Scored Questions are Distributed

The scored math questions are divided across the two sub-topics:

The table above is important because it shows you that you need to study both sub-topics equally as they both account for about half of the content tested on the TEAS math exam.

Calculator Use on TEAS Math

You do not need to bring a calculator with you for the TEAS math portion of the exam. ATI will provide you with a basic four-function calculator for the exam. Personal calculators are not allowed.

The four-function calculator is designed for basic math functions. Knowing how to use the calculator and being familiar with it will be very useful for you when testing day comes along.

What the On-Screen Calculator Can and Cannot Do

The four-function calculator you will be provided can do the following:

• Addition
• Subtraction
• Multiplication
• Division

The main purpose of this calculator is to help you solve basic arithmetic and work through multi-step problems. You will still need to know how to set up equations, work with percentages, work with ratios and proportions, and more.

At the end of the day, you still need to know how to do all of the math, the four-function calculator just helps you solve the problems quicker than having to do the actual math in your head or on scratch paper.

Scratch Paper

Scratch paper can be helpful when taking the math portion of the exam. You will be allowed a sheet of computer paper (8.5 x 11) to help work through questions.

The scratch paper must be blank prior to starting the exam. You can also use a small tabletop whiteboard if you are taking the exam remotely.

How to Study for the TEAS Math Section

Before you do anything, take our TEAS practice exam. This exam will help you figure out where you stand. You may find that you struggle more in other subjects (besides math).

After you narrow down which subject you struggled the most with, begin studying that subject. For example, if you struggled most with math, review all of the TEAS math concepts above.
