Studying for HESI Vocabulary
When studying for the vocabulary portion of the exam, make sure you focus on these concepts:
- Common Vocabulary Words: Be familiar with commonly used words in nursing, healthcare, and everyday language.
- Synonyms and Antonyms: Understand words that have similar and opposite meanings.
- Word Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes: Be able to recognize common prefixes, suffixes, and root words to help identify meanings.
- Medical Terminology: Be familiar with basic medical terms.
HESI Vocab FAQs
Some of the topics that are tested on the HESI vocab exam include:

There are 55 total questions on the vocab portion of the HESI. However, 5 of the 55 questions will not be counted towards your score. You will not know which 5 questions are unscored, so try your hardest on all questions.
You will have 50 minutes to complete the vocab portion of the exam. To keep pace, you will want to spend less than 54 seconds per question.
A great way to study for this section is by using a HESI A2 test study guide. Our study guide specifically includes vocabulary terms that you should be familiar with. We present them in flashcard format, which is a great way to digest material.
