NREMT Overview
The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) is responsible for administering the credentials for emergency medical service professionals in the United States.
The NREMT administers certifications across 4 different levels:
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
- Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
- Paramedic
Each certification builds on the previous level, with exams covering similar content areas but increasing in complexity. For more info, visit the official NREMT website.
NREMT EMT Test Overview
The EMT certification is one of the more common NREMT certifications that people obtain. Here is what you can expect to find on your NREMT EMT examination:
EMT Cognitive Exam
This is the first portion of the exam.
- Number of Questions: 70-120
- Time Limit: 2 Hours
- Format: Computer Adaptive
There are 5 content domains covered on the exam:
Content Domain | Percent of Examination |
---|---|
Scene Size-Up and Safety | 15% – 19% |
Primary Assessment | 39% – 43% |
Secondary Assessment | 5% – 9% |
Patient Treatment and Transport | 20% – 24% |
Operations | 10% – 14% |
This portion of the exam is administered by the NREMT. This is the portion of the exam most people are looking for an EMT practice test for.
Our EMT prep course offers 10 full-length practice exams and 1,475+ EMT practice questions.
EMT Psychomotor Exam
This is the second portion of the exam. Candidates will be asked to perform live assessments while expected to meet a certain set of standards while taking this test.
This test is different than most tests students have taken in the past since it takes place in a live setting and is very hands-on. The following topics may be covered on this portion of the exam:
- Long Bone Immobilization
- Joint Immobilization
- Cardiac Arrest Management
- Bleeding Control
- Shock Management
- Spine Immobilization
- Ventilation
- Patient Assessment
The time limit and number of questions will vary. This test is not administered by the NREMT, but instead is administered by the state EMS office in which you reside.
Note: Our free EMT practice test above will help prepare you for this portion of the exam by giving you the knowledge to know what to do in certain situations.
NREMT EMT Exam Question Types
There will be a total of 70-120 questions on the cognitive portion of the EMT exam. Here are the types of EMT questions you can expect:
- Multiple-Choice: Standard multiple-choice questions that have 1 correct answer.
- Multiple-Response: Questions that have multiple correct answers (typically 2 or 3).
- Build Lists: Questions that ask you to order content according to the instructions given to you.
- Drag-and-Drop: Questions that require you to drag the answer and drop it into the appropriate box.
- Option/Check Box: Questions that ask you to work your way down a list and select if something is relevant or not.
Practice for the NREMT with the Right Tools
1. Practice Exams
A free NREMT practice test (like the one above) is a great place to start. This will help you determine if you are ready for your exam or not.
If you are not ready, take another EMT sample exam. We offer 10 full-length exams in our online EMT prep course.
A practice exam will also help you become more familiar with the exam, types of questions, timing, and more. We also include detailed answer explanations with every single question.
2. Study Guides
Study guides are another awesome tool to use for your NREMT test prep. The trick is to find a study guide that covers only the most important information.
That is where we come in. Our learning content only covers the information you need to know. We hate wasting time and so should you.
3. Flashcards
There are a ton of terms, prefixes, and suffixes you should know before taking your EMT exam. Our flashcards cover this information in an easy-to-understand format.
You can even speed study our flashcards if you do not want to flip through each flashcard individually.
4. Question Banks
Sometimes you may want to practice for the exam in an untimed (and stress free) environment. This is where our question banks come in.
All of the NREMT practice questions in the question banks are untimed and in a question and answer format. You will immediately see the answer after each question.
You can also choose to work on a specific content domain you struggle with.
Tips and Tricks for NREMT Exam Prep
Preparing for the NREMT EMT can feel overwhelming. Here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind when practicing:
- Get a Baseline: Take our National Registry EMT practice test above to get a general baseline. Use this to determine if you need more help or not.
- Practice, Practice, Practice: You can never take too many practice exams. Try to take as many exams as you can (full-length exams are better).
- Review Answer Explanations: After taking your practice exams, review the answer explanations. These can help you learn important concepts.
- Give Yourself Time: Try not to cram all your studies into a short timeframe. Give yourself some time to prepare. We recommend at least 2 weeks.
You can use our EMT prep solution to help prepare for the exam.
Frequently Asked Questions
There will be between 70 and 120 total questions on the cognitive portion of the EMT exam.
For the psychomotor exam, you will be asked to perform live assessments. The time limit and number of questions will vary.
You will be given 2 hours to complete the cognitive portion of the exam.
The NREMT does not use a simple pass/fail for their exams. Since the tests are computer adaptive, they use a more sophisticated system to determine who passes.
The computer will recognize your performance over time and decide whether it is above or below the standard set. There is no minimum number of questions you must answer correctly, it will depend on your performance.
This applies to each section – however the order of the questions may seem random with you receiving a question about trauma then an operations question.
Yes, the NREMT updated the EMT exam on April 7th, 2025. Some of the changes they made were:
- New content domains
- New types of questions
We have made the necessary adjustments to our content to reflect these changes.
You will have 6 chances to pass the cognitive portion of the EMT test. You will need to wait 15 days between each attempt.
After 3 unsuccessful attempts, you will need to submit proof of completion of a remedial training program.
You will need to pay a fee of $104 to take the exam. This fee applies for each exam attempt, so make sure you are properly prepared the first time to avoid having to pay the fee again to retest.
